New JV2 Coach! We'd like to welcome Katie Rarick to our coaching squad. Many of you may already know Coach Rarick from her role as Activities Director at SHS - we are excited to have her join the team.
New to Sherwood/New to Tennis?
Welcome! We are very proud of our program and love getting new players in. Feel free to reach out to us to let us know who you are and that you are interested in tennis. You can contact head coach Peter at: hwenceslao@sherwood.k12.or.us. Our Tennis-Wiki page also has answers to tons of common questions.
Registration and Physical Exam:
Players need to register and have a physical exam from the last two years on file at the school in order to practice on March 2. You can register for girls tennis here:
- Fitness Preparation: Being a strong tennis player requires good overall fitness, both for working hard for short period and being in shape to play for several hours. Fitness targets for the team are below - people trying out for varsity should work hard to be able to do these prior to day 1. JV and JV2 players will also want to be fit, but the tryout process is less rigorous.
-- Plank with good form on your feet (not knees) for 1 minute
-- Wall sit for 1 minute
-- 10 Burpees
-- 5 pushups, preferably not on your knees
-- 15 Air Squats
-- 15 Sit-ups
You should also be prepared for sprints of various lengths and direction changes and not being exhasuted after just one of those. Todd recommends being able to do 6 down-and-back "near sprints" across the 4 SHS courts with a 1-minute rest between - this is a great way to build up.
WHY CHOOSE TENNIS
For girls looking to try something new, tennis is a great option. We understand that tennis will be a top priority for some, but may be a second or third sport or just something to do with your friends. Those are all great options. We do expect players to fully (or nearly fully) commit during the 8-10 week Spring season, but the off-season is pressure-free. For those who want to work hard and improve, we'll do everything we can to help you. But if you have other priorities, we understand.
Why Else? There are tons of reasons! Tennis is a sport for life. You don't see many adults out playing other sports after high school and college. But Portland alone has over 4,000 adults still competing in tennis. Most of the coaches play 4+ times per week and compete regularly (Peter plays 30-50 official matches per year). Studies even show that tennis players live nearly 10 years longer.
About Us
Sherwood Girls Tennis was founded with one main principle: Opportunity.
We provide the opportunity to learn to play tennis and to learn to love the game by through coaches who are passionate about both playing and teaching tennis. With Varsity, JV and JV2 teams, the team includes all skill levels, even beginners. In addition to the season, we offer 50+ off-season practices to give every player the support to meet their goals.
Over the years, we have become one of the strongest teams in Oregon. Our strength lies in the number of talented and hard-working players we have in the program. Most players don't start until high school but can quickly rise through the program if they take advantage of all the opportunities. The team's success comes from having enough players who choose to practice and coaches who are eager to help.
