JV2 Tennis
JV2 Intro
Thanks for checking out Sherwood Girls Tennis. Tennis is a great sport to start playing in high school. This page has some information for those who are interested in tennis but have never played (or have barely played). For players who have played more than a few times before, you'll probably be trying for the varsity or JV teams, so most of this won't apply.
Each year, about 10-15 girls decide they want to try tennis for the first time. It's not at all like a lot of other sports where everyone has been playing for 10 years already. It usually works out that our entire JV2 team is just learning to play. The same thing happens at other schools too, so matches against them are pretty even. So, if you want to play, don't worry that you won't fit in.
Here are some things to expect on our JV2 team:
The entire tennis team is a more casual environment than a lot of sports, and the JV2 team is more about teaching people to play than winning. We do expect you to be committed to the team and be willing to work in practice. So it's more casual for sure but not a place to just show up occasionally to chat.
We start up on March 2, 2026.
Practices are every day, usually around 4 p.m. at the Hawk's View courts
When it rains, the courts are too slippery, so we practice inside (the sites and times are less predictable)
We will start with the basics of how to hold the racquet and will work through the various shots and rules in the first few weeks.
1-3 matches per week will start in the 3rd week of the season. JV2 has more home matches than away ones. For away matches, the JV2 team will sometimes travel with Varsity and JV, but frequently play a different school.
There will be 1-3 Saturdays with matches or tournaments.
Most players bring their own racquets to play, or borrow one from a friend. If you don't have one, we do have some spares that you can use.
Practice will not be required over Spring Break. The team may have optional practices, depending on the weather and coach/player availability.
The season will wrap up in early May.
Optional practices are available in the summer and fall for those who really like it and want to keep working on their games. Some players who do this have made the varsity team their second year.
We request that you wear tennis shoes with good side-to-side support (not running shoes). Check out Player's Racquet Shop on Hall Blvd. in Beaverton or tennisexpress.com online for a larger selection.
